Announcement of the 12 finalists of the Alliance for Dual VET Award

This edition of the Award has been organised, for the second consecutive year, between the CEOE Foundation and the Bertelsmann Foundation, within the framework of the Alliance for Dual Vocational Training.

FECAVEM, AECOC and UNESPA in the Organisation category; AGBAR, Cosentino and COVAP, in the Large Company category; Inves Biofarn, Seabery and SSH Team, in the SME category; and CIFP Ausiàs March, IES San José and Institut Bonanova, in the Educational Centre category, will be the finalists in the 7th edition of the Alliance for Dual VET Award. The jury of the Alliance for Dual VET Award has announced the list of finalists following its meeting at the Espacio Bertelsmann.

The Alliance for Dual Vocational Training Award was created in 2017 to acknowledge and reward the commitment to dual VET in Spain and give visibility to the winning good practices as well as to the actors involved. This year’s edition is organised by the Bertelsmann Foundation and theCEOE Foundation.

These awards aims to celebrate those committed to innovation in learning models based on training in real work environments. The goal is to raise awareness among the business community, schools, organizations, and society as a whole of the need to promote quality dual vocational training in our country. This will lead to a reduction in youth unemployment, an improvement in the competitiveness of our companies and a closer relationship between the worlds of business and education.

The finalists were chosen by an impartial and independent jury made up of a representative of each of the partners promoting the Alliance for Dual Vocational Training, a representative of the CEOE Foundation, and representatives of the winners from the previous edition. The Award ceremony was held on June 7 at the headquarters of CEOE in Madrid.

MEET THE FINALISTS

Organisation Category:

FECAVEM, the Catalan employers’ association for Automotive Distribution, has been working since 2017 on adapting the Sales and Commercial Space Management degree with a curricular orientation to the professional profile of “Automotive Salesperson”. We think their project is extraordinary for the following reasons:

•    For its quality, given that the project responds to the challenge of finding trained and qualified professionals for the sales departments of car dealerships. They prepare didactic material so that the training schools can guide their students towards this programme and the companies offer masterclasses, which can also be taught by teachers and include visits and talks.

•    For its innovation, given that it provides employment advice to micro-SMEs for the extension of the project and promotes a matching-selection process between companies and students that works both virtually and face-to-face.

•    For thecooperation and involvement, given that the project was born from the creation of a working team, and the monitoring committee (comprising all the actors involved) meets periodically to supervise the training and improve its operation.

AECOC (Association of Manufacturers and Distributors) promotes the upper secondary intermediate VET programme“Commercialization of food products” in Galicia and the higher VET programme “Marketing and advertising” online in Madrid. We think their project is extraordinary for the following reasons:

•    For the cooperation and involvement, given that it collaborates with many educational centres, large companies, administrations, and institutions and acts as a catalyst for action among the associated companies and as a link between the different actors. In addition, it organises working groups with companies to update content, address challenges and improve how students are welcomed.

•    For its quality, given that the training contents in both programmes have been defined in collaboration with the companies and in response to their real needs. In addition, they train teachers, collaborate with the training centres in selecting students and organise workshops to address specific topics of interest for the training.

•    For its replicability, given that the project is based on a need for professional profiles that are in great demand throughout Spain and, in addition to the projects being promoted in Galicia and Madrid, they are in the process of expanding to other territories.

Since 2018, UNESPA and the insurance sector have been developing the curricular adaptation of the Higher VET Programme in Administration and Finance for the insurance sector. We consider their project to be extraordinary for the following reasons:

•    For its quality, since the Dual Vocational Training programme with special emphasis in Insurance adds specialised content related to the insurance sector to the higher VET programme in Administration and Finance, and learners do 1000 hours of practical work at the company. This means that, at the end of the programme, students are awarded the Certificate of Higher Technician in Administration and Finance, with a special concentration on Insurance, as well as the Certificate of Insurance Mediator level 2, officially recognised as qualifying them to advise on insurance sales.

•    For its innovation, which is reflected in an innovative platform for cross-interviews between companies and students, called “speedating”, which works as a virtual job fair, where students and companies introduce themselves and rate each other.

•    For its contribution to the promotion of dual vocational training, given that they have created a website with information about the project and they carry out an annual advertising campaign on social networks and other online channels. Informative webinars are also held for companies and students.

•    For the employability, given that 72% of the students are hired by the company in which they completed their training placement.

Small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) category:

SSHTEAM is a company dedicated to cybersecurity that was founded in 2017 as an entrepreneurial project by a dual vocational training student and a teacher. We think their project is extraordinary for the following reasons:

•    For its quality, since they rely on dual vocational training as a way of attracting talent and they provide individualised training for each student, adapting it to their abilities in accordance with a road map of content tailored to each learner. Students receive bilingual training at the company, as English is commonly used on the job. They also help certain training centres in the creation of curricula.

•    For its innovation, given that the company was created as an entrepreneurial project by a dual vocational training student and a teacher, and it has developed and grown on the basis of dual vocational training. The company employs just 20 people and 15 of them, i.e. 90% of its employees, have completed a Dual VET course.

•    For the employability, given that 90% of the students who complete the dual vocational training at the company end up being hired by the company itself.

InvesBiofarm is an SME dedicated to the research, development, and manufacture of health products and biotechnological cosmetics and located in the Granada Health Technology Park. We think their project is extraordinary for the following reasons:

•    For its quality, given that they adapt the timing of the programme to the learning pace of each student in order to increase their motivation. They also have an assessment committee to evaluate the student’s performance and all the employees act as tutors.

•    For the employability, given that 80% of the dual training learners go on to work for the company immediately after completing the training, and a further 10% do so after six months. Moreover, 14 of the 25 current employees are former dual vocational training students.

•    For its innovation, given that the dual training learners at the company share with their colleagues in other companies the type of tests and instruments they work within order to broaden their training.

Seabery is a company that develops educational technologies through simulation based on artificial vision for use in training centres and companies. We think their project is extraordinary for the following reasons:

•    For its quality, given that the students do not have defined positions within the company, but rotate between different areas of work in order to learn the knowledge and skills required in each field, and are permanently supervised and mentored by their work tutor.

•    For its innovation, given that they use state-of-the-art technologies to create environments where students can practice at no cost, safely, making the best use of their time and in a sustainable way.

•    For their promoting efforts, given that, by means of their own activity, which focuses on the development of educational technologies, they promote dual vocational training and contribute to making it more efficient and productive.

Educational centre category:

The Integrated VET Centrer (CIFP) Ausiàs March in Valencia offers the Higher-VET programmein International Trade in the flexible dual VET modality. We think their project is extraordinary for the following reasons:

•    For its innovative approach, given that the project has been designed ad hoc through the flexible dual vocational training model. Its training has an extended duration in order to adapt it to the professional profile of port logistics.

•    For its quality, given that they have an internal management system and a quality control process that allows them to monitor the performance of the companies and the labour market insertion of the students. It also includes new teaching methodologies, specific training in procedures, software, and documentation specific to the port cluster companies, management of computer tools and communication in English.

•    For the cooperation and involvement, given that they involve the educational board, the Valencia Port Foundation and the cluster of companies in the Port of Valencia.

The Secondary Education Institute (IES) San José de Badajoz has been teaching, since 2013, the Higher VET Programme in Processes and Quality in the Food Industry in dual mode. We think their project is extraordinary for the following reasons:

•    For the cooperation and involvement, given that this school works with research centres as well as with companies.

•    For its quality, given that the students do training placements in both courses and in two different companies, as well as in a research centre. In addition, they can enjoy international experiences thanks to the centre’s Erasmus option.

•    For its innovation, given that they are committed to innovative learning methodologies such as project-based work, the creation of radio podcasts on topics discussed in the classroom or the attendance of students at congresses, conferences, and fairs.

The Institut Bonanova in Barcelona offers various higher education programmes in the field of dual vocational training in healthcare. We think their project is extraordinary for the following reasons:

•    For its innovation and quality, given that the training programmes they offer are in the field of healthcare and the students are trained in public hospitals. Orientation days are organised for first-year students with the participation of second-year students, company tutors, and former students of the programme. Another innovative element is the introduction of a trial period for dual vocational training candidates, which includes 100 hours of practical training and a job interview with the company to ensure a good fit. During the dual placement, monthly check-ups are established between company and school tutors and students receive feedback from these meetings.

•    For the promotion of participation and cooperation, given that, in addition to the Parc de Salut Mar de Barcelona Consortium, various companies belonging to the consortium, all of them leaders in the public health sector, also collaborate.

•    For its replicability, given that the project can be replicated in other companies in the public sector, and they have even defined the strategy and procedure to be followed to facilitate this replication.

•    For the promotion, given that their students actively participate in videos and promotional channels to publicise dual vocational training.

Large company category:

AGBAR is a company with over 150 years of history that deals with water and environmental management. We think their project is extraordinary for the following reasons:

•    For its quality, given that since 2012 it has been leading the promotion of dual vocational training in the water sector in Spain and acting as a driving force, to the benefit of all the agents involved in the sector. When there was no specific training programme for the water sector, Agbar promoted, through its Water School, a specific qualification awarded by the Government of Catalonia in Water Treatment Networks and Stations, which was implemented directly in dual mode. Subsequently, it participated in the design of the official training programmes for the Intermediate VET in Water Networks and Stations and the Higher VET in Water Management.

•    For its cooperation and collaboration, given that it works with many companies and institutions, public administrations, and training centres in different Spanish regions.

•    For its innovation, given that it is a pioneering project in the promotion of dual vocational training in Spain within the water sector. Furthermore, the creation of the Water School helps to transfer knowledge and has made it possible to deploy dual vocational training within the framework of a comprehensive Professional Qualification model.

•    For its quality, given that the company’s management is fully committed to dual vocational training and considers it to be the main source of industrial talent. In addition, they cover the needs of the sector and the region and train in many programmes of different professional fields. In the 2022/23 academic year, they have 159 Dual Vocational Training students in 4 different training programmes. Each year the project grows in resources, facilities, and entity participation. Noteworthy elements of quality are the training of teachers, the rotation of students through different sections and departments and the meeting schedule for monitoring and evaluating students.

•    For its innovation, given that it promotes dual vocational training among its employees as a means of professionalisation and internal development in the company. It is worth noting that 28% of Cosentino’s dual vocational training students are company employees who are continuing their training and professional development. In addition, they train teachers, provide tools, technology, materials and offer talks by professionals at the training centre.

•    For the employability, since 85% of the students who pursue dual studies at the company are hired at the end of their training period and a further 10% are hired in other companies.
